Did You Know?

  • Fort Gratiot Township, with a current population of just over 10,000, was established in 1867 and named for General Charles Gratiot, the engineer who laid out the fort.
  • Sarnia’s natural harbor first attracted the French explorer, La Salle, who named the site “The Rapids.” In 1835, although villagers wanted to change the name, they couldn’t agree on a new one. Sir John Colborne, Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada at the time, suggested “Port Sarnia.” On January 4, 1836, the name was formally adopted by a vote of 26 to 16.
  • When Canada’s Governor General, H.R.H the Duke of Connaught, and his daughter, Princess Patricia, visited Sarnia in 1914, the city adopted the nickname, “The Imperial City.”
  • Sarnia’s International Symphony Orchestra is renowned in the area and won the “Outstanding Community Orchestra Award” in 2011.
  • Chris Hadfield, a resident of Sarnia, has flown two space shuttle missions and served as commander of the International Space Station.
